Notes:

  1. Threadiverse is Piefed, Lemmy, and Mbin. Fediverse only accounts for listed software [12], not the other [117] software tracked by Fediverse-Observer.
  2. Fediverse-Observer provides daily MAU back to 20221130. FediDB only provides a current snapshot (snapshot within the last 15 minutes, no time series data) and only tracks some of the software [67].
  3. FediDB seems to use unclear math to get there counts and overestimate the MAU on most software (see previous post, if interested in learning more).
  4. Weirdly Loops has a ~3 week gap in data about a year ago ( this should be last week of gap).

Interesting numbers, it doesn’t feel that the Threadyverse is so small, but the numbers are very few, especially PieFed feels like it’s many more people.

The threadiverse is all interconnected. So it doesn’t really matter if you are on Piefed, Lemmy, or Mbin. They should all feel pretty much the same (same number of users because they are the same users, haha).

Question about adding a platform to the Fediverse (ActivityPub help)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/44562049

I’m posting on behalf of another user on Reddit,u/TasmanianHorse, who’s exploring the possibility of integrating their platform (Echo, Pinterest alternative) into the Fediverse using ActivityPub.

I recommended the Fediverse to them earlier on, and they’re interested in making their platform interoperable with existing services (like Mastodon, Lemmy, Peertube, Pixelfed, Loops, etc.), but are still in the early stages and looking for guidance.

Some of the questions that they had:

  • What are the main challenges when implementing ActivityPub from scratch?
  • Are there recommended libraries, frameworks, or starter projects to build on?
  • How difficult is it to ensure compatibility with multiple Fediverse platforms?
  • Any common pitfalls or things to avoid early on?
  • Are there best practices for moderation, federation control, or scalability?

If anyone here has experience developing for the Fediverse or has worked with ActivityPub, your insights would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Are there any of these many alternatives you like more? Or that you feel like serve specific use cases?

Yesterday I found Interstellar which has this feature. I assume mainly because it is not only a Lemmy app, but also a PieFed one, which has this feature in the reference frontend (AFAIK).

Are there other Lemmy apps or frontends that support thread merging?

Mbin doesn’t directly merge threads together, in the Piefed sense where the comments from all threads appear on the same page. It does however group duplicate posts together. For example, I’m looking at this, I don’t see the comments on the other threads here, but I DO see there’s four other threads linked.

Tried attaching an image showing how it looks, not sure if that’ll show up in Interstellar/Piefed/Lemmy though.

So, an interesting issue came up in the #Fedify repo that I’ve been thinking about: #629.

You know how every #fediverse server uses schema:PropertyValue in actor attachment for profile metadata fields (like “Website”, “GitHub”, etc.)? Turns out, strict #AS2 validators like browser.pub reject it, because the AS2 spec says attachment should only contain Object or Link—and PropertyValue is a schema.org type, not an Activity Streams 2.0 type.

The thing is, we can’t just drop the type like we did with Endpoints (#576), because Mastodon and others rely on seeing "type": "PropertyValue" to render profile fields. But at the same time, it’s technically not spec-compliant.

I’m leaning towards writing a #FEP to formalize this existing practice rather than trying to invent a new type (like toot:PropertyValue extending Object), which would be a nightmare to migrate across the whole fediverse.

What do you all think? Has anyone else run into this? Would love to hear thoughts from implementers and spec folks.

@hongminhee +1 for formalizing the existing practice in a FEP.

PropertyValue is covered in FEP-fb2a, but it proposes an alternative representation which implementers must support:

The source code of #PawFed is now available on #Codeberg. PawFed is a federated map for animal welfare: reports come from the #Fediverse via #ActivityPub mentions, and permanent places like shelters and vets are pulled from OpenStreetMap.

A location is not always required: if you have supplies or food to give away and can ship, just say so.

Found an abandoned animal? Just report it.

No offence, but I don’t think that I would want Pixelfed to add Pinterest style features.

It just feels like, at least IMO, trying to be too many things at once.

Pixelfed should remain separate from any Pinterest alternative that the Fediverse decides upon.

Now if Pixelfed wants to add features that are inspired by Pinterest, then that’s a different thing.

The artist donation model is the real innovation here. Most music streaming sucks because the economics are backwards. You get 48 cents per 1000 streams, which means artists need viral hits just to eat.

Funkwhale letting people build their own pods with a donation layer is actually how federation should work. Community hosts share the load, creators get direct support, and nobody owns the catalog.

Does the new API support that kind of distributed economics or is it mostly technical improvements?

Advertising instance capabilities via nodeinfo

$$15125
https://piefed.social/u/rimu posted on Mar 20, 2026 06:46

Instance software is constantly evolving and adding new features. Wouldn’t it be good if there was a way for other instances to discover what features yours can handle, to determine how they will communicate?

One way to do this could be to add the FEPs, etc that an instance supports to the nodeinfo response that it serves. Possibly as a protocol, a service or just in the metadata part.

Where would make the most sense? Or is there another mechanism apart from nodeinfo entirely?
