Hey all,

I want to add 4 HDDs externally to my server, which i use for jellyfin, some cloud etc. I was thinking about getting a SAS port like the LSI 9300 8e. The problem i have is that i dont know where to store my HDDs. I need a power supply and ideally a case or something. I have the feeling you find a lot of DAS solutions with usb which are to avoid or eSATA which throttles everything down. Have you any recommendations for cases and power supplies for me? and if you know a good all in one DAS where every hdd as a seperate sata port, please let me know.

I ghettoed it. Might work for you.

Since my main nas was using all 6 satas I wanted to expand.

Got a PCIe SAS card, 2 SAS to SATA external cables, each cable goes to 4 satas.

For the disks I got a backplane for 8 disks, a random tower, a cheap PSU and have the sas to SATA cables going from one tower to the other. The PSU is jumped, I still need to get a button for it.

What to study to be able to host a server?

$$16376
https://thebrainbin.org/u/Auster posted on Mar 23, 2026 09:41

For some months now, I’ve been trying to set up an Mbin instance, since as it’s more manual than the other softwares I found, and I understand things better if I can see the logic behind them. However, trying to figure things out as I go, it’s so much stuff that I figured out instead what I knew was very little.

As I was also interested in hosting other sites, this made me reevaluate things, and turns out several things I don’t know, like how to host two sites in a same machine, how to handle horizontal attacks, what some tools are used for, etc.

So going back to the title, what to study? Maybe some specific book? Private classes/courses? Online tutorials? Something else? Just no university suggestion, please - from experience, they are extremely shallow at best.

Thanks in advance!

Hosting a fediverse instance is at the higher end of the scale when it comes to hosting. There tend to be a lot of moving parts as it’s complex software.

Host a static site first, just a bunch of plain HTML files.

Then host a Wordpress site.

Then host a fediverse thing.

A good hands-on approach with less risk is to rent a managed vps or shared webhost, and explore how they have it set up, and what you can do with it.

Don’t deploy anything serious, just Hello World sandbox stuff. Go watch the logs ti see just how nmany mots are looking for wordpress sites, etc. Use the softaculous installer, if available, to quickly mess with different app deployment.

Look at the zone editor to see how domains are configured, though shared hosting will be odd sett and limited by the hosting company. See the antispam and security settings. Look at how they set up email accounts, and mess with the database editor(s).

At each step, have a browser window open with reference docs. If you are learning linux terminal commands, I strongly suggest upgrading from basic man reference material and using the tl;dr webapp.

Crypto Ark a custodial social platform with fundraising/crypto sending abilities

$$16313
https://lemmy.world/u/cryptoark posted on Mar 23, 2026 03:01

The core idea: crypto transactions shouldn’t be a separate step from using a social platform. When you sign up, custodial wallets for LTC, BTC, and DOGE are automatically created for your account - no seed phrases, no setup. Deposits and withdrawals go straight to/from that wallet, minus miner and platform fees.

That wallet is wired into two features that actually use it:

Fundraisers: create a fundraiser and receive Crypto directly to your platform wallets. Donors send from their own wallet aka platform balance. Transactions are onchain and visible on the fundraiser page. Doners also control miner fees too!!

Direct messages: send Crypto easily while messaging someone. Same wallet, same balance - no switching context or copying addresses. Use inbuilt percent buttons and the miner fee slider for as much control as possible!!

Address relay: fundraisers and message tip flows generate fresh addresses per transaction. These act as relays only - they never hold funds, everything routes back to the stable registration wallet.

Everything else: communities, posts, comments, karma/trust/profile ratings, mod tools, NSFW controls, anon posts and fundraisers, PGP key slot for profiles, status monitoring/help, percent buttons & fee control along with reporting options for everything a user could post!!!

On moderation: we’ve put real effort into harm reduction. Automatic and manual content moderation runs continuously, CSAM detection and removal is active 247, there’s also a dedicated officer panel for authorized personnel to review reported and admin-removed content. The officer panel is built but not yet active (if theirs no users theirs no need :/) - access will require specific clearance and authorization when it goes live.

Current state: LTC only in early access! - BTC and DOGE require their own stable nodes so they’re disabled for now. Being upfront: wallets are custodial, the platform holds the keys. Withdrawals are available anytime.

We Would appreciate feedback on anything at all even if people go ham posting. Theirs still definitely some bugs scattered around so if anyone finds any bugs/issues/fee discrepancy’s contact: founder-arthur.pfister@cryptoark.net

I built a simple tool to find things to do without the usual paywalls or account signups

$$16312
https://lemmy.world/u/getinfotoyou posted on Mar 23, 2026 02:56

Hey everyone. I wanted to share a small project I’ve been working on lately. It’s called BoredNoMore, and I built it mostly out of frustration with how the lifestyle and hobby app space has been moving lately.

Whenever I found myself stuck on a rainy Saturday or just procrastinating, I’d look for new hobbies or quick projects. It felt like every app I tried either wanted me to sign up with an account immediately or hit me with a subscription prompt just to see more than five ideas. It feels strange to pay a monthly fee just to get a suggestion to go for a hike or start a charcoal sketch.

So, I put together https://borednomore.getinfotoyou.com/ as a straightforward alternative. It’s a web app that gives you random activity ideas, creative challenges, and small projects to tackle. The goal was to keep it as lean as possible. There are no accounts, no tiers, and no data harvesting. You just click a button and get a suggestion.

The main difference between this and the bigger platforms is the lack of friction. I didn’t want to build a social network for boredom; I just wanted a utility that solves the problem of being stuck in a loop of scrolling. Whether you’re a student looking for a break or just someone who needs a nudge to try something new, it’s meant to be a simple tool rather than another service competing for your credit card.

I’m trying to keep the ideas varied—everything from small technical challenges to simple outdoor tasks. Since it’s a solo project, I’m always looking for ways to make the suggestions more useful.

If you have a few minutes to check it out, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Does the interface feel intuitive? Are the suggestions actually things you’d consider doing, or are they a bit too niche? Any feedback helps me keep the project headed in the right direction.

Hosting Dockerized website on VPS with Apache

$$16122
https://lemmy.wtf/u/bestbakerycookie posted on Mar 22, 2026 19:34

I made a Docker container of a website that’s difficult to deploy, and I can reliably deploy it on localhost on my personal machine. The container sets up an Apache server with all the files and config to run the website.

However, the story is different on my VPS running Ubuntu and Apache. I have two other websites running on the same VPS, each with different domains, and when I deploy the dockerized website I can’t access that site. I opened ports on UFW. The Docker container sets the site to run on port 8000, and I tried running a reverse proxy on just that site with Apache by defining a config pointing towards the internal Docker IP on port 8000, but no luck.

Now I’m thinking of running a reverse proxy, but I haven’t found any guides covering my situation: routing websites on both the host machine and through Docker. nginx-proxy looks to cover only Docker containers, and the Apache reverse proxy couldn’t access the Docker container.

What are my options here? I plan to dockerize everything eventually, but that will be sometime in the future and not right away.

Ok, the docker container will need to be on a different port to your proxy Something like 127.0.0.1:8080:80

In your proxy, the upstream will be 127.0.0.1:8080.

This should give you what you need

Help with installing PiHole on PostmarketOS

I am trying to get pihole with unbound installed on a PostmarketOS device (open rc init). I can’t seem to get this installed at all.

I tried using the bash installer, but that didn’t work. I tried using the Alpine repositories, but it didn’t work either.

Anyone with tips or resources on how to get this thing to work?

The install script ceased being supported 3 years ago on Alpine. I think it was over handling of non-systemctl systems, but I can’t remember.

I used to run pihole on alpine containers and one say the install just wouldn’t update the FTL server. I switched to another DNS solution at that point.

Best suggestion is to run the docker container, as another user suggested here.

The docker container is simply not composing and running into other errors that don’t make sense despite reading up about them.

I built a simple runner game for the browser because I missed the days of instant, no-nonsense gaming

$$15865
https://lemmy.world/u/getinfotoyou posted on Mar 22, 2026 06:08

I’ve spent most of my time lately building tools and apps, but I wanted to shift gears and create something that was just straightforward fun. I feel like modern gaming often comes with a lot of friction—you have to download a huge client, create an account, sit through a long tutorial, and then navigate cluttered menus before you actually get to play anything. I missed the simplicity of old-school browser games where you could just open a tab and start playing immediately.

That was the goal with Echo Runner. It’s a fast-paced runner where you dodge obstacles and try to beat your own high score. There are no installs or account signups required. I designed it to be lightweight enough that you can fire it up on a phone while waiting for a bus or on a desktop during a quick break at work.

The mechanics are intentionally simple: run, dodge, and “echo” your way forward. I focused on making the controls feel responsive because in a game this fast, even a slight delay feels like a dealbreaker. It’s built to run directly in your browser at https://echorunner.getinfotoyou.com/ and should work across pretty much any device with a decent web connection.

I think there’s still a lot of value in games that don’t demand an hour of your time just to get started. Sometimes you just want to see how far you can get in a few minutes without any extra overhead. It’s been a fun challenge to see how much polish I can put into a project while keeping the barrier to entry as low as possible.

I’d love to hear what you think about the difficulty curve and the overall feel of the movement. If you have a moment to give it a try, let me know if it runs smoothly for you or if there are any specific features you think would fit the simplicity of the design. #EchoRunner #BrowserGame #IndieGame #FreeGame #CasualGaming

However I may have spoken too soon with Colota… it stopped registering my location after a first trip, and wouldn’t restart tracking until I restarted my phone (GrapheneOS Pixel 9). I need to look at the logs and maybe raise an issue.

Dawarich has had some great updates in the past few weeks, and I’m hoping Colota + Dawarich is my future family tracker system as they both have a very nice feel to them.

GPS Logger + Reitti is my background system atm while I mess with Colota & Dawarich.
