@smallcircles

I agree that AP/AS has its limitations and shortcomings, but —

I want this to work with Fediverse software.

If I choose a Linked-Data namespace not supported by any Fediverse software, it won't be.

@oli @iftas yeah, I was trying to get Jaz to become FIRES native, and we'd upload the full historical snapshot of those deny lists that we have.

That's what powered the test data you saw & how I built the CSV import feature. I still have no idea how to give a REST API for that for programmatic use.

Shot form blog/vlog apps do not exist because people demanded them, they exist because of the ability to make them addictive. When Twitter first came out most people in fact didn't get the point, and it was commonly said that "you have to try it to get it". More than anything they have proved addictability more than preference.

The fact that every single one of those microcontent platforms is, or has been, augmented by add-on tools like "thread unrollers" and cross posting with other platforms like YouTube are an indication that there is at least a desire to have a *choice* between bleeding out a quick post and saying something more thought out.

The Fedi exists because of Mastodon's blogging implementation but *persists* despite it, because the ActivityPub protocol underlying it is not restricted to the platform's limitations and provides a lower friction way to interact with different platforms like Pixelfed, Peertube, Lemmy and its derivatives, WordPress blogs and so on.

I guess I am old but I have a hard time believing that format works without somebody else deciding what you see next. which I get that people are currently fine with but which I'd hope we eventually see the danger of.

AI still doesn't work very well, businesses are faking it, and a reckoning is coming

a recent attempt to rewrite SQLite in Rust using AI. “It passed all the unit tests, the shape of the code looks right,” he said. It’s 3.7x more lines of code that performs 2,000 times worse than the actual SQLite. Two thousand times worse for a database is a non-viable product. It’s a dumpster fire. Throw it away. All that money you spent on it is worthless.”

Insurers, he said, are already lobbying state-level insurance regulators to win a carve-out in business insurance liability policies so they are not obligated to cover AI-related workflows. “That kills the whole system,” Deeks said. Smiley added: “The question here is if it’s all so great, why are the insurance underwriters going to great lengths to prohibit coverage for these things? They’re generally pretty good at risk profiling.”

@rimu "Fake it 'till you make it" does not work with artefacts. It may help you form habits, but if it's not your attitude that is the problem, but rather the tool, then "Fake it 'till you make it" *will lead to the emperors new clothes* .

It's even worse than that: profilers rub your code 20-100 tubes slower, which, if performance is OKish to begin with is workable. 2000x too slow? Can't even profile!

*But* ... flying middle class people around the world to check up on people doing the work on the ground is far from ideal. This can't help but create asymmetrical relationships, a problem I suspect the Just Peoples team are just as keen to solve as anyone else.

What might be better is a way for people doing community-led projects to form webs of trust and audit each other. Both within the Global South, and with solidarity groups in the Global North who are travelling to the South anyway, eg to offer practical support; deliver equipment, give training, etc.

That way, for every group a solidarity funding effort like Just Peoples has time to audit and trust, it opens up whole new networks of groups and projects they can treat as P2P audited.

So looping back round to my jumping off point, is there a way we can deploy fediverse tech to support the formation of these webs of trust, and P2P auditing?
