Every time this comes out, it’s like I was a kid waiting for my Pop Sci & Mech mags to arrive in the mail, and later on Byte magazine. The downside is, after you get your server setup and functioning, there’s not much to add to it.

Honestly it feels that way for a while then something new comes along. I just started mine around this time last year, added a NAS and a VPS, and then aside from small tweaks and daily updates there hasn’t been much to do.

But now I’m thinking I want to shrink my single monolithic proxmox VM to separate out some services to their own VMs (one for pihole/unbound, one for very personal services like paperless and actualbudget, one for any exposed services, etc). On top of that, I’m thinking of setting up an additional server or VPS for social media instances and such.

Kinda feels like it comes in waves. Set up a ton of stuff, let it sit for a few months, do it all again

I run quite a few containers, and I just can’t find anything I’d like to add that would be functional. I’m always tinkering tho, and learning. The learning part is my favorite.

I’m one of those people done in by the minio rugpull. I see RustFS there, but they’re done a lot of things on their licensing front incredibly similarly to what minio did. And that scares me.

I also saw a Github issue where someone was aaking what’s their say on whether they’ll ever pull a minio, amd their answer was basically, “We don’t plan to. Just trust us bro.”

I know what I’m not using.

I run a super minimal setup for my server and home network devices but I still like to see how the self-hosting scene is evolving. It’s changed so much in the last year alone.

I think one reason why I choose to run such a minimal setup is because there’s so many trust issues that seem to be developing over time with so many different projects. At the very least, every weekly newsletter keeps me inspired to keep creating my own projects.

Recently I just finished writing my own back up system including rotating out old backups using only rsync and POSIX portable shell commands. I wrote the scripts to be adaptable to many uses outside of just backups so I am really proud of how they turned out.

My next self-hosting project is something far more absurd and I’m excited to start developing it.

A satirical website dubbed Malus (malice) has been making its rounds and fooling users after claiming it’s deploying AI tools to recreate open source projects from scratch with corporate-friendly licensing (my personal favorite is Emergency AGPL Removal in the footer links)

Hahaha. That’s funny. Oh, guys.

Meanwhile, the only element I need to identify an undisclosed vibe coded project these days is a single statement found in the project’s repo: Made with ♥ by Developer. (Developers are not capable of love.)

Made with ♥ by selfh.st

If you need some s3 solution, seaweedfs or garage are some options. And if you really care about licensing, garage is AGPL and thereqis no CLA that deprieve the contributors of their code ownership, I don’t remember for seaweedfs
