Went to the hardware store to find cap nuts

M6 x 1.0 stainless steel cap nuts aka acorn nuts were $2.39 each at Ace and I need 14. They had 3 in stock. Would have been about $36.00 with tax.

Went to Amazon and got a 50 pack for $5.39 with 4.7 out of 5 star reviews and free shipping.

The prices on specialty hardware are ridiculous. I hate Amazon, but that’s my go to, and I just keep a wide variety on hand at all times. Aliexpress is great also, or at last it was before the tariffs.

You should start your own hardware store!

I’ve gone to an Ace hardware near me half a dozen times for bolts, etc and I have yet to buy anything. If they have it in stock it’s sold individually and ridiculous prices. I just plan my projects ahead and get everything on McMaster now.

I can see that. I would love to buy certain things locally, but even if I can find them (that’s a big If), they’re overpriced (see the post text). So yes, begrudgingly, it’s cheaper and easier (and uses less gas, wear and tear on my car, and saves me a boatload of time) to buy from Amazon.

It is entirely possible to hate something, but still need it/use it.

yeah I will use amazon if I have exhausted all other options only. as in I have been unable to find the thing I need literally anywhere else. ebay can still be good, but you’ll wait a long time for shipping typically.

I think ive had to relent twice a year since I swore them off in 2015 or so

McMaster-Carr , they have reasonable hardware especially if you have one local and don’t need shipping. But aliexpress if you can wait 2 weeks.

Thing is though a lot of times I can only find bulk versions online. Feels wasteful to get 50 of something when I only need 2 and am never going to need them again.

Yeah, I have a true value in walking distance and it’s a similar deal. They’re a great family that has done a lot for the town, and have been running a, I don’t know what to call it, masonry shop? They sell all sorts of rock and stones and pavers, with free consulting and design work to build an outstanding backyard. They also have the second cheapest propane in town (the cheapest is cash only). The whole family works there and provide excellent service

Then like 5 years ago they added a true value franchise. I want to shop there. There are so many things right about this local shop. It’s exactly the kind of situation we all need to encourage more ….. but it’s so much more expensive than the Home Depot, which is more expensive than ordering online. I e never found anything remotely similar in price

Next time you go in, find a newly hired clerk and ask where they keep the ball cocks, bastard files, scratch awls. plumb bobs, and pet cocks.

Why are the so expensive? In a German standard hardware store they cost like 40ct a piece?

I always try to shop at our local Ace, too. The people are friendly and knowledgeable but the price disparity is a lot to handle.

There’s local McMaster Carr in Canada? I’ve never seen one.

In Canada we’d normally use an industrial distributor service. But if you are near Grainger supply they carry the same stuff.

Oh, ok. I thought you specifically meant Mcmaster had locations in Canada. I use Gregg’s and Grainger (occasionally), but M-C has a lot of stuff neither of those do.

Same, but I live in a small town with few other options, so I have to weigh the cost of driving 30 minutes one way if I need something immediately.
