I am asking a serious question? Does this show actually have any fans?

The show is an utter mess. Has found its fans or is this just more of the notion that Trek fans all supposed to line up when another of these Trek messes are released?

I concluded it’s not really made for me so I’m rewatching Lower Decks

With the exception of the Section 31 movie, everything they’ve made has been better than Discovery.

Academy is certainly different but I think it stands well on its own merits, including good character work, respectful use of existing canon, and a strong emotional core.

I think the problem is that the internet is more prevalent and mainstream than back then. Like newsgroups could be downright toxic, but the majority of fans didn’t see them.

When I was watching TNG, it was either at my dads house watching it on television or discussing it with my friends in school.

Yeah, the only reason there wasn’t a concerted anti-woke campaign against Trek back then was the technology just didn’t exist to enable people with minority opinions like that to easily find each other.

Still, they were there. I remember some BBS Trek guys being “that guy” at a few Trek conventions in the 90s, they were just usually solo or in tiny groups.

Academy has the best elements of every single series to date.

It’s not perfect—_nothing is_—but it’s impressively good and enjoyable. Yes, there are some quieter or seemingly “boring” moments from time to time, but these are usually when you need to pay attention, as they pay off big time soon after.

That being said, —and this isn’t necessarily aimed towards you personally— if you’re the kind to snub an entire series barely 5 min into it after mindlessly watching while doomscrolling, then repeatedly trashing it online to justify your lack of interest, then, no, it will not satisfy you, just like nothing else will.

I liked the last episode more than any other in the season, despite it being maybe the least Star Trek one?

Previous one was ridiculous. Oh, these “kids” are traumatised by a bad experience? Let’s fix that with theatre! All together, ‘cause of course everyone can heal with the same “therapy”.

I still hope this series can turn out to be good, after all TNG itself didn’t start out great. But it seems they want to bash you over the head with emotions and ideas, rather than make you feel and develop them yourself.

I think Strange New Worlds found its feet and has a good thing going. I hope Starfleet Academy will as well. I think the weaknesses of the first season have been foot-finding for the most part.

It’s clear they’re going for a younger demographic and I think there’s a bit of “hello fellow kids” and some misguided writing, but I’m generally willing to put up with it.

I’m not a huge fan of the touchy-feely more-talk-than-action thing in Discovery / SNW / Academy… but… eh, I can deal with it. It’s not all bad, it’s just a lot.

But Star Trek to me has never been hard sci-fi. They’ve not been afraid to be political, and I respect and appreciate that, even when it’s a bit ham-handed sometimes. They do sometimes have some good ideas and give things to think about, but mostly we get the standard tropes of the alien-of-the-week causes some problem that has a solution we’ve never seen before and will never see again. And that’s annoying, but it’s fine for entertainment.

I am entertained. And so I cannot complain too much.

A couple of these eps have been JUST so much about the people/social and I don’t care about them THAT much, but I do care about them enough to root for them in action scenes. heh.

I think overall the series is pretty good. Very dark. But that’s just the current way of things. I did like the bright Orville better, but there really are some pretty visuals in here, so…… fine. heh

….one example of how Trek is not hard sci-fi: In the most recent ep, there was a series of things surrounding some planets. It was described and depicted as a “ring” when space is three dimensional and it should obviously be a sphere. But that’s hard to depict, explain, think about for most people, so they collapse everything to 2D and……. it’s……. it’s fine. It’s really, just fine. Annoying but fine.

True, although the internet is slightly older than most (or at least many) realize: 1989 saw the first internet company with access to the public. One of the services offered was access to Usenet. And before that, BBSes has started to offer Usenet access.

Of course, the internet didn’t really explode until around 1996, I’d say. But it was growing before that.

Not invalidating your point. I think this stuff is interesting. :)

That’s my problem in a nutshell. I have no problem with woke material when done will, but i utterly detest this fake virtue signaling. It’s the exact same tripe as every fucking company having a rainbow flag on their Twitter account for the month of June. It’s performative, obvious, and infuriating that more can’t see how insulting it truly is.

So you watched 5 episodes—half the season only, and come here to give your opinion on the matter of whether the entire series is good or not?

I rest my case your honor.

I honestly think writers and show runners do it on purpose. They can’t write for shit, so they use bait, and when someone takes said bait, they use it to dismiss all criticism.

See Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, Star Wars, Dr. Who, Wheel of Time, Halo, Velma, Resident Evil et al. Rinse and repeat, over and over.

Fandom is such a toxic concept nowadays.

Do I personally like the show? No. But it’s not for me. I’m old. It’s a new world with new demographics to cater to and new viewers to appeal to.

So it’s perfectly okay that it’s not for me. It’s not as though my trek has vanished. It’s still there whenever I want to watch it. My trek is literally everywhere. Pluto TV, Paramount Plus, or the crap-tonne of DVD’s I’ve collected over the years.

Society has changed, writing styles have changed, audiences have changed. Get over it, people. How come people can’t not watch something while shutting the fuck up about it? Why does your dislike of a property give you the right to make other people’s lives miserable.

Trek is branching out. All the stuff from the 90s was episodic, fitting into the syndication template.

SNW and LD are a lot more like those 90s series, which is why I like them. It’s also the same reason I like The Orville.

Disco is a lot more like a Game of Thrones style series. There are some subplots but a lot of the show is focused on the big story.

Academy is a school drama. Not my bag but it’s definitely someone’s. But just like I’m not gonna shit on someone’s love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - which isn’t for me for similar reasons - I’m not gonna shit on someone for liking Academy.

Discovery and SFA are terrible soap-opera garbage. it’s the type of writing some alfluenza orange-county high-schooler thinks is witty; it’s what people who can’t read consider “good”.

I think the problem is that a lot of the current Trek shows are poorly written and waste good casts. Programmable matter? Dumb. “I swallowed my combadge”? Barf. A crying alien is the answer to why every starship in the universe suddenly explodes? Just awful.

Disco had is problems, but SFA is really a solid series and honestly I would rank it over SNW in quality. Have you actually seen it instead of complaining about minor details (the combadge, I agree that the burn was idiotic but that ship sailed with disco already)

It is much better then Discovery, but has to work in the universe discovery created. I like it more than Picard. More or less on the same level as SNW in terms of quality. Episode 2 and 3 were bad to me, but all other episodes after that were progressively more enjoyable to very good. Episode 6 makes a boring looking antagonist better to the point I would argue it is the best we got after ENT.

Of course the internet and social media amplifies the critics. But I hate the idea of blaming a not so good series on the internet and the fans. Because the reverse could also happen. And it doesn’t.

Maybe I’m not a fan because I only liked TNG, DS9, VOY and some of ENT, while not really liking much of the new Kurtzman universe/timeline. I skipped DIS as I don’t think it’s my thing. And I skipped PIC too. Still, I was convinced to try SNW on lemmy, and I liked much of it. Maybe as much as ENT. I also loved LD before it got cancelled. Even with all the usual toxicity of some fans, some positive comments and videos were able to sway me into trying them and liking them.

However, as much as I agree that some “fans” are toxic, other fans have made very detailed and logical videos about how this most recent series is bad as Star Trek. The ratio of bad reviews from pretty much all the spectrum of fans kind of confirms this, and I’m sick of seeing a lot of the past actors act like they know exactly what Star Trek is, should be, what fans should like, and if they don’t like it, it’s their fault and the internet’s fault.

“It was literally the biggest Star Trek set ever,”

It’s not because it’s litterally the biggest set ever that it makes it good Star Trek. And it’s not because he directed an episode that the writing will be better.

As we can see with the series Picard, and to an extent the movie Nemesis, sometimes actors are not exactly the best references for the canon of what they are acting. The dune buggy in Nemesis was Steward’s idea. As is a big part of the concept behind the Picard series. And having actors like Kate Mulgrew and Robert Picardo defending this and even going against some fans like me, is hurtful too. Enough so that I’m willingly distancing myself from social media and stuff related to Star Trek now. It pains me to see them push something that has lost most of its soul and blame the fans.

I think Strange New Worlds found its feet and has a good thing going. I hope Starfleet Academy will as well.

SNW didn’t find its footing, it was good from the start IMO. It’s touchy-feely but in a less banal way.
