Honey, I Shrunk The Vids [Mr. Universe Edition] v1.0.5

Honey, I Shrunk The Vids is an overengineered oversimplified system-agnostic frontend for FFMPEG.

This is a followup to a post I made yesterday, about a silly little Windows application I’d made for batch transcoding files. I wanted something that I could just dump my files onto without having to muck about with Handbrake or Tdarr - post here, for those curious: https://piefed.ca/c/selfhosted/p/568748/honey-i-shrunk-the-vids-a-windows-transcoding-frontend-for-ffmpeg

So I spent today making my silly little Windows application a silly little platform-agnostic application. I rewrote the whole thing in Rust and JavaScript with a webview frontend, and apparently Github lets you compile binaries for quite the range of target platforms, so I have compiled binaries available for Windows, Linux, and Mac (Intel/Apple Silicon). I’m pretty pleased with how it’s coming along - if anyone decides to give it a go, please let me know if you find issues!

The first release candidate of systemd 260 is now available for testing. Systemd 260 finally does away with System V service scripts support. Also notable to systemd 260 is the work around the new “mstack” feature.

Cozy? Why does a personal finance management need to be Cozy? And why does it end with “d” in its name like its a daemon (for example sshd, httpd) of some sort?

security and blobs

$$4097
https://infosec.pub/u/cm0002 posted on Feb 25, 2026 14:28

Linux-libre turned 18 recently, and I’m told there are still some people who try to pass as security experts who disapprove of the refusal to load binary blobs that claim to fix security problems.

I kind of understand the appeal of security bug fixes, but delivering them in the form of binary blobs mean that the one who accepts them has to trust them blindly and to give up any pretense of security from the vendor, and that seems to be a problem that many pretense security conscious minds seem to disregard, for whatever reason

They disregard the risk from the vendor because you are already using their hardware. The hardware has firmware already included which is proprietary, the hardware itself is proprietary, and hardware effectively runs as root anyways. You should already trust your hardware or you shouldn’t be using it. Linux-libre is a purity test, that is it. It is security theater which actually, definitely, really makes you vulnerable without doing anything meaningful. The only time it makes any sense is if you only use open source hardware.

But vim is one of the most powerful text editors ever created. It’s so powerful and good that it gets ridiculous. Also, from an ergonomic standpoint, your body will thank you for using vim/neovim

Wine 11.3 Released with Mono 11 and VKD3D 1.19 Upgrade

$$3784
https://lemy.lol/u/cm0002 posted on Feb 24, 2026 19:46

The Wine Project, a compatibility layer that enables Linux and macOS users to run Windows applications, has released version 11.3 as the third maintenance update to the stable 11.x series. Here are the main highlights.

This release updates the integrated Mono engine to version 11.0, improving support for .NET-based applications. The bundled vkd3d library is now at version 1.19, enhancing Direct3D 12 translation over Vulkan. These updates are relevant for modern Windows software and games that depend on current .NET runtimes and Direct3D APIs.

Audio handling is refined, with the DirectSound implementation now including an improved FIR filter for more accurate sound processing and better playback in applications using legacy Windows audio APIs. Developers also introduced optimizations in PDB loading to reduce overhead when debugging or running applications that rely on symbol data.

Desktop Linux is in a better place than it used to be. App stores have made software discovery much simpler, and it’s become normal to install an app without even needing to know what a repository is.

We can grab almost any app in seconds (or minutes, depending on your connection), but that convenience comes with a trade-off. We’ve lost some of the fine-grained control that used to be standard on the Linux desktop.
