Bought a secondhand laptop and spent all evening trying to get the sound working

Bought a secondhand laptop to take some of the wear and tear off of my daily driver, and spent the better part of the afternoon and most of the evening trying to get the sound working. Sound card was detected, the headphones worked, and it acted like sound was playing but the speakers weren’t making a peep.

Messed around with every Pipewire setting I could find, tried re-mapping the internal “pins” with some obscure JACK utility, tried several kernel flags, and went down several more rabbit holes that looked promising all to no avail.

Finally took the thing apart, and the speakers were just disconnected from the motherboard 🤦‍♂️ Apparently the refurbishing company forgot to re-attach them.

All in all, not bad for a $150 “beater” laptop.

I usually do that, too, but didn’t bother this time since it’s a slightly different model but uses the same motherboard as my old work-issue laptop, and I already knew everything worked in Linux except the fingerprint sensor. Only fired up the W11 install it came with to make sure it wasn’t DOA and wiped it immediately after – I just forgot to check the speakers lol.

I will say, these days, anything less than 1010 is criminal. 2020 is slow but manageable. 3030 is more than most normal people realistically need,

I am an avid Linux user and sharer of ISOs, never had a lick of trouble on 3010.

101.5 was tough but doable.

1.5/300k was impossible.

Stopping that deal would have made the world a lot better place, actually! N9 was awesome, and during the first half a year of Windows Phone based Nokia phones, N9 sold more than all of those combined. Even though N9 was never advertised anywhere at all!

Are there stats for how much voting eligible users there are, and how much of them actually vote on governance topics, or see (click on) governance topics?

I was scared off a couple years ago when I attempted to host it myself. I took a break from selfhosting, but now I’m back, and from what I learned in the past, I know now not to torture myself swimming upstream when there are far easier downstream currents to follow.

I’m looking at conduit but I’m currently writing up a doc to plan out the process, and understand it before I actually deploy anything. I don’t want to open ports, don’t need federation and don’t need encryption, since I’ll be using tailscale to host a private server to only members of my tailnet.

I’ll report back, either here or in the main community, because I don’t want to expose ports, rent a VPS or use ansible for a simple private server for less than 10 people.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a markdown editor?

$$211
https://sopuli.xyz/u/sbeak posted on Feb 18, 2026 14:52

My main requirement is that I am using Syncthing to sync my notes from my Android phone, which uses Quillpad. Quillpad is amazing and looks super nice, and functional too, but all the notes are in one big folder rather than being subdivided by notebook. So I require a markdown editor that can create “notebooks” but don’t change the folder structure of the notes (I tested putting notes in subfolders, and quillpad thought the notes were deleted. Silly Quillpad!)

So the notebooks/similar organisation of notes needs to be specific to the app and should not change the folder structure. I would prefer if the app is open-source too, and something that fits with my desktop (KDE Plasma) would be cool too :D

This rules out Obsidian (which puts notes in a folder structure. Obsidian is great, but won’t sync well with Quillpad), Joplin won’t work either.

I am using EndeavourOS with KDE Plasma
