systemd 260-rc1 Released: New "mstack" Feature, System V Service Scripts No Longer Supported

The first release candidate of systemd 260 is now available for testing. Systemd 260 finally does away with System V service scripts support. Also notable to systemd 260 is the work around the new “mstack” feature.

Sounds like a pretty good argument for ditching both gnome and systemd in one swift go, which can only sound like a win. Perhaps we’ll be seeing a supervisord- or openrc-based Linux distro for the EU.

Cozy? Why does a personal finance management need to be Cozy? And why does it end with “d” in its name like its a daemon (for example sshd, httpd) of some sort?

Is it me, or does Linux Mint have terrible file search?

I search for files, and it never seems to find them. Plus it only does one drive at a time, and not just searches my external drives. Any suggestions?

ncdu

that’s fine if wanting a tui, like for its intended purpose, rather than something grepable/awkable/sortable/cutable/headable/tailable/etc. like better suited to file search

Bare minimum to run Wayland Apps

$$3316
https://piefed.social/u/vogi posted on Feb 23, 2026 21:53

Hello, I am currently building an arcade machine which is intended to run indie games built natively for Linux.

For that I want to use the wayland protocol because it feels like the most sensible option I have nowadays.

Currently I am using sway as I am already using it as my daily wm and it can be configured very easily into a kiosk mode. Everything works perfect and I have no problems what so ever!

Which is why I want to ask if there is a even more bare minimum setup to run Wayland apps?

I wanted to do the same for a dedicated jellyfin player box; a defunct laptop or mini PC that boots straight into the jellyfin-media-player (jellyfin desktop nowadays) in TV mode and was looking for just the bare minimum of packages to achieve this. gave up, curious how others solved it.

Weston can be configured to use a kiosk shell, which is fairly minimal

Very late but curious. How difficult is it for someone who genuinely never has used Linux before, to go those leaps? Someone who’s not braindead à la “grandma doesn’t know what the red X button is or does”, but just a basic user “I’ve heard of a terminal and you can do commands with it but idk, I use maps and files…”.

Like is there a self hosting guide for idiots?

It’s a bit more complicated but the video I linked suggests using DuckDNS and a Wireguard VPN. It certainly works though in my experience it can be a bit of a pain because of CGNAT. If you have a reliable static or long-lived IP lease on IPv6 though it’s much less clumsy.

Wine 11.3 Released with Mono 11 and VKD3D 1.19 Upgrade

$$3784
https://lemy.lol/u/cm0002 posted on Feb 24, 2026 19:46

The Wine Project, a compatibility layer that enables Linux and macOS users to run Windows applications, has released version 11.3 as the third maintenance update to the stable 11.x series. Here are the main highlights.

This release updates the integrated Mono engine to version 11.0, improving support for .NET-based applications. The bundled vkd3d library is now at version 1.19, enhancing Direct3D 12 translation over Vulkan. These updates are relevant for modern Windows software and games that depend on current .NET runtimes and Direct3D APIs.

Audio handling is refined, with the DirectSound implementation now including an improved FIR filter for more accurate sound processing and better playback in applications using legacy Windows audio APIs. Developers also introduced optimizations in PDB loading to reduce overhead when debugging or running applications that rely on symbol data.
