Misskey instance?

Hi, new to the fediverse, mainly looking at Lemmy and mastodon right now through mbin, liking it very much.

I’m a Japanese language learner, currently at N3 and wanted to look at some fediverse content in that language. Keep hearing about misskey, but registration is limited from outside of Japan? I’m going over there next month, does that mean I could open an account while I’m there?

Also a bit confused about how it works, when browsing as a guest everything seems to scroll at lightning speed, how is one supposed to use it?

But if you follow enough users, won’t you start getting quite a good amount of that? Plus, you can probably just browse the local of some Misskey instance and then, if you want to comment or upvote, open it from within your own instance? It won’t be perfect, but I would imagine it will do the job just fine for a student.

One thing that I forgot: Misskey has feature of instance-only post, which means a lot of people post won’t federate.

Idea : a sync app for our fediverse accounts

$$3057
https://piefed.social/u/Snoopy posted on Feb 23, 2026 12:51

Hi,

I want to suggest a concept to solve the issue losing our data when an instance shut down. Maybe it already exist.

Problem

When an instance shutdown, you have no way to recovert your account and export your blocklist, subcription…It is too late and lost. You have to start it again, who prepared a backup ? Almost no one because its design was flawed.

Idea

The only solution would be nomadic identity.

I think we, the fediverse, can create a sync app on our computer. Here is the concept :

  • flatpak for linux distro agnostic
  • fediapp agnostic. we want to support every free software fedi app.

We install it on our computer. Then click on a plus button to add our fedi accounts.

It will ask for 2-3 fields :

  • username
  • password
  • generated-token (not sure if it is useful, security ?)

Then it will sync on our local computer : blocklist, followers, subscription, setting… maybe encrypted for increased security

Later, we can imagine other features as :

  • master account
  • merging blocklist, subcription between selected account
  • exporting posts, comments…
  • managing account settings
  • mobile app
  • support of apple and windows

What do you think ? Can we achieve that ?

Very cool ! Thank for your reply. :)

I’m looking for a tool that do that automatically since i’m not well versed in scripts but i can achieve that with lot hardship.

I believe lot users not well versed in software, script would benefit from it and it will increase their trust to the fediverse if they have a tool that help them.

Is it easy to achieve that for every fediverse software ? Or we will have to do a script for every software ? :)

I am working on this. I have a local post archive that syncs with bluesky accounts. I am using DIDs as the primary identifier, and hope to incorporate activitypub and rss soon under the same identifier. I have also created a social graph importer for walled garden sites, such as facebook/instagram, so folks have an escape hatch for all their legacy social media history, and a way to manage exported files in a nice file browser format. I will have something to share in the near future, but suffice it to say, I think storing your data locally is an idea very worth pursuing.

  • Note: Threadiverse is Piefed, Lemmy, and Mbin. Fediverse only accounts for listed software [12], not the other [117] software tracked by the website.
  • Source: Fediverse-Observer
  • Caveats: Only using 1 source, using two different sets of data within the same source (why 6 month and 1 year data seems off compared to the others, I didn’t dig through the code to figure out why that would be).

Takeaways:

  • Big growth in the Fediverse this week (ex. Mastodon >50%, Lemmy and Piefed >10%). Looks like the Fediverse-Observer software updated yesterday and found(?) a bunch of previously unknown servers (10-50%). Due to the change, my API code now works and made this post far easier :)
  • Piefed and Loops had positive growth each day last week
  • Congrats to Piefed (>5000 MAU) and PeerTube for reaching All-Time highs (>40,000 MAU)
  • Forgejo lost a server in the last week that had ~80% of its users (20260217)

Mods: Again, feel free to delete if its not appropriate in the community.

Thanks for finding that and pointed it out.

I looked through the lists of servers for most of the listed software and found a couple more examples. I wasn’t able to find duplicates in some of the software, and the few I did find, wouldn’t account for the entire update induced MAU increase:

  • Mastodon (625k of 395k)
  • Lemmy (4.5k of 3.7k)
  • Pixelfed (5k of 15k)
  • Peertube (4k of 13k)

Either way, I’ll reach out to the Fediverse-Observer dev and let him know of the issue.

The features are theoretical in the sense that there is no real guarantee they’d be possible after BSky corp changes their behavior and that they are in use only in the least significant way possible, for tiny and irrelevant numbers of users. But of course this is just restating the obvious again. For a network truly to be shielded against this sort of thing it should be decentralized already before.

Stupid question, but I thought you click the sidebar, and the three options were “join/leave, post, and block”.

But now, the ONE time I want to block a community, I don’t see the option. So I go to another community, just to see if it looks different. It doesn’t.

The communities now only have join/leave, and post. No block.

Don’t know what kind of work you do, but I work with people, my partner works with kids. Short form content is absolutely ravaging minds. But you can believe whatever you want.

Fact is, we see kids that are and aren’t raised with access to short form content on social media, and the ones without do a whole lot better.

Speech impediments are getting worse for a reason (the parents have a role in this too, if your around a kid, keep your damn phone in your pocket and talk to the poor thing).

But again, you do you. You can claim its pseudo-science all you want when your kids end up needing a speech therapist and need medication just to finish an old movie 🤙

Wafrn.net admins on age verification

$$1887
https://piefed.kobel.fyi/u/squirrel posted on Feb 20, 2026 21:28

On the behalf of the admin and moderation team:

We will not add age-verification unless we will literally be force-shutdown if we don’t.

If we do, it will be a one-on-one call in which you show one of us – personally, on our actual phone numbers or signal or some shit – your ID and we just put a little mark on your profile saying “yep we verified”

we will not, at any point, ever build age-verification into the software nor rely on my butt to do it. We don’t fucking want your data, it’s a massive risk to have around.

If we can get by without it, we will simply not do it, even if we have to block some countries. The UK is not a “target market” for app.wafrn.net as we have no target market.

I thought it was quite clear. Verifying your age with an alcohol purchase receipt is a dumb idea for a large variety of reasons, including ease of acquiring one, ease of copying images, ease of printing one yourself and the cumulative ease of doing all this without an actual adult willingly involved in your scheme. It’s is not nearly as fool proof as verifying government ID.

Of course, I’m against all invasive forms of age verification. Doesn’t mean I’m going to advocate for a rally bad alternative either.
