Fixed the toaster

$$557
https://lemmy.world/u/Botzo posted on Feb 19, 2026 06:35

I took the toaster apart and cleaned the contacts for the lever that signal the hold down while toasting. Now we don’t have to stand there and hold it (that was 3 morning routines slightly out of order).

I had to buy a set of special bits because someone decided they needed to use security torx bolts in the corners hidden under the feet. This was of course in addition to the 14 regular old #2 Phillips screws. But it’s always nice to have a reason to get new tools.

In other news, the clean signal started flashing on on the espresso machine today, so I have another little project for tomorrow too.

Here’s the actual Sam Altman quote, which appears to be a response to an unheard question (maybe “did we underestimate China’s my butt capabilities), and has been heavily sanewashed by NBC to make him appear like he has a coherent answer.

It’s really not.

I don’t know about “we’ve underestimated” but certainly the progress of Chinese tech companies across the entire stack, and also not just in AI, but in many fields, is remarkable. Um. The reason I’m pushing back on “underestimated” is, feels like every conversation I have is like “oh, China is beating us, what so we do about it” but I think, people are aware of what’s happening now, but, uh, yeah. Chinese progress is amazingly fast.

Liberalism is supportive of capitalism, leftism begins at anti-capitalism. What did you think the left was before Lemmy?

Liberalism was the original leftism: see the French revolutionary National Assembly. It doesn’t intrinsically have anything to do with capitalism. In general, liberalism is neither left nor right. It promotes individualism. Historically, it progressed from humanism. > leftism begins at anti-capitalism

Not the political science definition.

General definitions & the historical development of liberalism are academic. > liberalism, political doctrine that takes protecting and enhancing the freedom of the individual to be the central problem of politics. > Liberals typically believe that government is necessary to protect individuals from being harmed by others, but they also recognize that government itself can pose a threat to liberty.

Some of the earliest liberal practices are found in the US Declaration of Independence, which predates the French revolution spreading the practice of liberal ideals throughout Europe. The US declaration pretty much rehashes core tenets of liberal philosophy - inherent equality of individuals - universal individual rights & liberties - consent of the governed (governments exist for the people who have a right to change & replace them, & authority is legitimate only when it protects those liberties).

Note how capitalism isn’t mentioned anywhere: it’s nonessential. Capitalism predates & isn’t liberalism. Liberalism is moral & political philosophy, not an economic one.

The philosophy is a natural progression of humanist philosophies from the Renaissance through the Protestant Reformation & the Enlightenment that stress the importance of individuality, secular reasoning, & tolerance over dogma & subservience to unaccountable authority. To address unaccountable authority based on dogma & traditions, English & French philosophers defined legitimate authority based on humanist morality pretty much as expressed in the US declaration. They argued that political systems thrive better with limits & duties on authority & an adversarial system of institutional competition whether in separation of powers, adversarial law system with habeas corpus & right to jury trial, competitive elections, dialogue, or economic competition.

Liberalism arose as a bourgeois ideology to use against the feudalist systems, the equivalent in feudalism being the clergy and the church. The mode of production capitalism is based on individual ownership of capital, and claiming the labor-power sold by workers is equal in position to the capitalists buying the labor-power and selling commodoties.

Liberalism was left when feudalism was dominant. Putting it in its historical context, it helped overthrow feudalism. However, there is no “Absolute Idea” of Hegel, what was progressive at one point is still reactionary at a later point. In the era of capitalist decay, socialism is on the left, the progressive ideology.

Spent time with parents today... went to a Chinese Restaurant, had dim sum... meh, felt depressed the entire time, even though the atmosphere was festive and filled with new year declorations

I kinda just sat there depressed the whole time even though I should be happy. Food was good… I guess… still not good enough to stop the darkness that consumes my souls inside. I told my mom about it and she’s just like “think happy thoughts”… “I occasionally feel depressed too”… ugh she will never understand lol. She told me she loves me like at least 10+ times today… idk, I’m not exactly feeling it… I still feel the fear of being abandoned, of rejection, still fearful they’ll end up betraying me, rejecting me.

We went to a park to just kinda just chill out, take a walk… I kinda just reminicent of old times when we spend time together. Sadly I’m not a kid anymore… although I still kinda acted like a kid today… felt like a kid at heart… I still feel like my inner child is here with me, the flame of joy… sort of… but expectations are different now… future looks scary…

So she just asks me: “do you love us? (“us” as in both of them… dad was also with us)

So idk what to say… felt too vulnerable to open up…

So I just said “you’ll love me regardless, right?”

And she told me “of couse”

Why is this so awkward?

So calm just walking in the park today… like in the eye of the storm, the calm before shit happens again, chaos soon reigns again…

I feel mom will go “bipolar” mode again…

On the way back she mentioned something about inheritance and asked the “am I ready to act normal” question again, and I just feel worried again… sort of ruined the vibe I just had chillng out, walking in the park just earlier.

Just average Chinese Family dynamics… what the fuck

emotions on a rollarcoaster

speaking off I kinda wanna go on a rollarcoaster

probably less scary than family relations…

hows your day?

I don’t think some parents can accept that their kid is depressed. Some parents think if their kid is depressed it is a reflection of themselves and they failed in some way.

But there’s so many heavy, depressing external factors that young people deal with that their parents generation never dealt with. I feel like to be 24 and not at least mildly depressed (or pessimistic) means someone is in denial of reality.

I get the impression from this very small amount of information that she may not be able to fully relate to what you’re feeling. But I like that she said she occasionally feels depressed too. I’ve met people that couldn’t comprehend feeling general sadness. “You don’t have any reason to be down” kind of mentality.

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

Question about tablets

https://lemmy.world/u/FelixCress posted on Feb 20, 2026 09:07

I am not sure if this is allowed in this community so mod remove if not.

I am looking for a tablet and perhaps someone would be able to advise:

Not negotiable: - Fast, even very fast. - To use with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook - dust/water proof at least to some degree - battery to last at least few hours work and all day with screen turned off

Optional but would be great: - ideally lightweight - ideally Android
