This past week, there has been some controversy about the new Plasma Login Manager, which launched with KDE Plasma 6.6 and requires systemd. Soon after, KaOS surprisingly announced it would stop using Plasma as its desktop environment.

Which, whichever way you look at it, is a significant shift, considering KaOS has used KDE for 12 years for its primary and only desktop environment and has always promoted itself as a Qt-focused and GTK-free Linux distribution.

As a response (though not directly addressing KaOS), KDE later shared its position on the matter, which I covered here. And then, a few days ago, KaOS posted an explanation of its decision on its official website.

My current internet setup is like this (which is common for most people).

fiber line from ISP <-> ISP fiber modem <-> Personal wifi router <-> switch

This is working fine with no issues. But I need to power two devices. I want to reduce this to a single device.

fiber line from ISP <-> Modem+Firewall PC <-> Switch <-> AP1,AP2...

From my initial research, what I need is an SFP module which can be attached to a PC which supports SFP. OPNsense should be able to handle most SFP modules.

What is the community’s take on this? Is this worth the effort? Can I find a mini-PC which supports SFP? Will it be cost effective?

Older 10G SFP+ models were definitely power hungry. I think they’ve gotten better since then, but I haven’t really looked into how much better.

The so-called lolrus was actually a southern elephant seal named Minazo. He was born in Uruguay, but spent most of his life in Japan where, measuring 4.5 meters long and weighing around two tons, he was said to be the largest seal in the country. Minazo died in October 2005 at the age of 11, and made his meme debut posthumously in June 2006 on YTMND. To this day Wikipedia considers him “one of the most famous southern elephant seals”. Merzbow released a two-volume album (1, 2) in his memory.
