Sunday dev challenge: how many free APIs can you chain together?

Here's one pipeline:
1. curl https://mating-liable-folk-fabulous.trycloudflare.com/uuid → get unique ID
2. curl https://mating-liable-folk-fabulous.trycloudflare.com/hash/sha256/yourtext → hash it
3. curl https://mating-liable-folk-fabulous.trycloudflare.com/base64/encode/yourtext → encode it

All free, no signup, no API key.

Try it:
curl https://mating-liable-folk-fabulous.trycloudflare.com/uuid

moonlight/sunshine is really good, i heavily recommend it! You can also use it as a teamviewer alternative, but at the moment it requires some light fiddling to open ports etc. so its not really easy enough for “grandma downloads sunshine to get tech support from you” yet.

I was told the series was supposed to be cannon with the game, but how can that be when no one’s talking about the orbital death laser that goes off every day? And what ever happened to Fisto? It’s these little details that really pull you out of the show.

Heaper, new tools to organize docs, photos [YouTube]

Interesting tool based on blocks to tag any document for photos you own. With app to allow access from any device. Blocks contains tags and links between them to organize all like a heap.
I haven’t installed the self-hosted version yet to see how it can interact with an existing Obsidian vault. Next step.

Essentially, yes: nowadays you can go much further without basic understanding of what’s going on. The ability to fire up magic black boxes that are somewhat functional without any configuration or understanding required is liberating at first, so it’s perfectly understandable. I don’t think it’s a panacea, though.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I am very carefully trying to find a space to share with people what I’m building … I don’t want to be blocked for selling things (I’m really not), but I hope to find a place to start a conversation about what an actually user friendly offering could look like.

I cannot believe that these existing offerings must be so expensive, and so enshittified. Where is the open source mentality?

Here’s a short and very incomplete list of things that could be done differently: - be priced reasonably - have one tier that includes everything - not have tons of dark patterns, anxiety traps, and addictive or just shitty behaviour - have better tools to manage the deluge of likes and messages (esp. a problem for women) - not remove features that users were happy with - not inject fake scarcity - mechanics to pause your own account, and cull inactive users - not enable mindless mass-swiping - let users filter on what’s in people’s profiles (again, without paying extra) - respect filters (eg. don’t show me people from 7000km away when I’ve set a 15km radius) - have filters be symmetrical (don’t show me smokers when I ask not to - and also don’t show me to smokers) - be radically transparent about user base, statistics, traffic, etc.

I’m still far from an alpha product and haven’t even secured a domain yet. Still laying the technical groundwork and reading research papers.

iDeck - yet another start/home page

iGoogle inspired start page with tabs support and built in RSS reader, weather, quote of the day widgets which can be resized and positioned around, couple customisation options are available as well. I was missing such type of app ever since iGoogle stopped being available, so here it is. There are probably some bugs lurking around which i’ll try fix in coming days/weeks but it’s usable for now.

Full disclosure, app was created with massive aid of LLMs (mainly Claude Sonnet)

I love the idea but would never personally go back to a separate music player. The extra cost and inconvenience of having to charge and carry a separate device just doesn’t seem appealing versus sticking all my flac files on an SD card in my phone.
